The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad informed us this afternoon, they will embargo all export cargoes (Dry and Refrigerated) moving from the origins listed below to Seattle & Tacoma - All Terminals. The railroad decision is due to vessel delays and terminal congestion, which is impacting their network. The embargo will be effective at midnight tonight. We do not know how long the embargo may last but, we will keep you advised.
In the meantime, HMM will accommodate your cargo by using alternate routes where possible. The following table includes the impacted origin ramps as well as provides alternate routes. Please note, some routes will require containers be of road legal weight because gateway terminals do not have on dock rail service from all origins.
Origin |
Alternative Route |
Restrictions |
Chicago, IL – LPC & Cicero |
LPC to L.A. Terminals |
On dock rail to all LA are terminals except Trapac & ITS |
Minneapolis, MN |
PRR to Vancouver |
Check with CP for restrictions |
Omaha, NE |
UPRR to L.A. terminals via Hobart Ramp |
Maximum 44,000 lbs./40’ |
Denver, CO |
UPRR to Oakland |
Maximum 44,000 lbs./40’ |
Containers already in route via BNSF to the PNW gateway will be delivered through to the intended terminal, however, we expect those shipments could experience delays.
Shipments received into the BNSF ramps that are impacted by the embargo tonight will be rerouted by HMM where alternative routes exist.
The exception to this will be from Minneapolis via Vancouver. Shippers who would like to use the Canadian route should contact customer service to elect that change.
